Social Determinants of Health Recap
We’re keeping the conversation going by bringing continued awareness to the social determinants impacting the health of our communities. Children’s Health hosted our annual Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Series panel discussion at their new state of the art facility in Plano, Texas. The discussion focused on Effective Strategies to Improve Health Equity.
The event was moderated by Jennifer R. Clark, MS, LSSYB, Senior Equitable Care Director at Children’s Health. Panelists included Stormee Williams, MD, MBA, Chief Health Equity Officer at Children’s Health; Michael Stewart, MBA, President of Charlton Methodist Medical Center; and Rosetta Roden RN, BSN, MBA, Assistant Vice President of Customer Experience at Molina Health. Each panelist shared insightful perspectives and innovative ideas that will help move us along the continuum to elevate the quality of healthcare services rendered to minority and underserved communities.
Herron Mitchell, FACHE SSGB, Chief Operations Officer, Foremost Family Health Centers and N.A.H.S.E. DFW member summarized the key takeaway’s perfectly:
“We learned that we must partner with other community organizations to fill in the gaps needed by our patients. Sometimes what we take for granted as everyday occurrences may be real obstacles for patients (e.g. $2 for gas or $2 for parking at a medical appointment). Finally, how much money is a life worth? Will we not put what is needed in place just to meet fiscal metrics? Those metrics are indeed important…no money, no mission, but we must balance with our love of humanity.”
